A Brief History of The Shambles

From butchers to boutiques

🥩

The Flesh Market

The name "Shambles" derives from the medieval word shamel, meaning booths or benches for displaying meat. In 1872, there were as many as 25 butchers located along this tiny street!

🏚️

Wonky Architecture

The buildings overhang the street so closely that in some parts, you can shake hands with the person in the window opposite. This was originally done to shelter the meat from direct sunlight.

🕊️

Margaret Clitherow

Number 10/11 was the home of Saint Margaret Clitherow. She was martyred in 1586 for harbouring Catholic priests. Her shrine remains on the street today and is open to visitors.

Did You Know? Look closely at the window sills of some of the older shops. You can still see the original medieval meat hooks hanging outside!

Squawk! Walking up and down The Shambles will cost you absolutely nothing. It is a public right of way. However, navigating the temptations of the fudge shops, ghost merchants, and wizarding stores is a different story for your bank balance!

The Harry Potter Connection

Did it inspire Diagon Alley?

🪄

The Inspiration

While J.K. Rowling has stated she did not base Diagon Alley directly on The Shambles, the resemblance is uncanny. The crooked aesthetics make it a haven for visiting Potterheads.

🦉

Wizarding Shops

The street currently houses three dedicated wizard-themed stores, including the incredibly popular 'The Shop That Must Not Be Named'. Expect queues to enter during the summer.

🧪

The Potions Cauldron

Located at Number 9¾ Shambles, this interactive shop sells magical, shimmering drinks and offers a fun "potions experience" in their secret back room.

Who Should Visit The Shambles?

Is it right for your itinerary?

WHO WILL LOVE IT

  • Photographers: The timber frames offer iconic, atmospheric shots.
  • Harry Potter Fans: The magical atmosphere and dedicated shops are perfect.
  • Shoppers: Full of lovely independent bakeries, fudge shops, and jewellers.

WHO MIGHT HATE IT

  • The Claustrophobic: The street is exceptionally narrow and gets packed.
  • Mobility Impaired: The cobbles are very uneven, which makes wheelchairs/pushchairs difficult.
  • Those Who Hate Crowds: At midday, you will be moving at a shoulder-to-shoulder shuffle.

Visiting The Shambles with Kids

Will children enjoy it?

👶

Under 5s

Pushchairs are highly impractical on the heavy cobbles. Be prepared for a bumpy ride and navigating tight corners around crowds.

🧒

Ages 6–12

They will adore it. The combination of sweet shops, making potions, and hunting for ghosts makes this street feel like an actual theme park to them.

📱

Teens

It's the ultimate TikTok and Instagram location in York. Grabbing a York Ghost to photograph in the snickelways is highly popular.

What to See on The Shambles

Highlights of the medieval street

Shrine of Margaret Clitherow

A quiet, reflective chapel located midway down the street dedicated to the Pearl of York. Entry is free.

🍬 Shambles Market

Just tucked behind the main street through the alleyways, offering fantastic street food, crafts, and vintage goods.

🚶 The Snickelways

Don't just walk the main street—duck into the tiny, dark alleys (snickelways) that branch off The Shambles for a true medieval feel.

The York Ghost Merchants

The most famous queue in York

👻

You will undoubtedly notice a massive queue stretching down the street. This is for The York Ghost Merchants, an incredibly popular shop selling handmade, bespoke ghost figurines. Because the shop is tiny and the experience is theatrical, the queue can often take over an hour. If you want one, get there before the shop opens at 10:00 am!

The Shambles Crowd Heatmap

The best and worst times to visit

🟢 8:00 am – 9:30 am

The Golden Hour. The shops are closed, but the street is empty. This is the absolute best time for photography before the crowds arrive.

🟡 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm

Calming Down. The large coach tours leave the city centre and the shops begin to close, making the street much easier to navigate.

🔴 11:00 am – 3:30 pm

Peak Chaos. Expect to be moving at a slow shuffle. It is incredibly congested and difficult to stop and look at window displays.
