Located centrally within the Coppergate Shopping Centre.

The Coppergate Dig

Between 1976 and 1981, the York Archaeological Trust excavated the site and revealed the incredibly well-preserved remains of a Viking-Age city, complete with timber buildings.

Preserved in Peat

The wet, oxygen-free soil preserved everyday items that normally rot away. They found perfectly intact leather shoes, textiles, and even fossilised human poo (the famous Lloyd's Bank coprolite!).

Rebuilding the Past

Instead of burying the history, the attraction was built in 1984 directly over the excavation site, meaning you are standing exactly where the Vikings stood over 1,000 years ago.

WHO WILL LOVE IT

• Families: The immersive time-capsule ride and animatronics are perfectly tailored for kids.
• History Buffs: The artefact galleries house incredible, genuine 10th-century items.
• Sensory Seekers: The authentic (and sometimes stinky) sounds and smells truly transport you.

WHO MIGHT HATE IT

• The Claustrophobic: The attraction is entirely underground and involves a dark, enclosed ride.
• Sensitive Noses: The famous "Viking smells" (including fish and cesspits) are extremely realistic!
• Buggy Users: Pushchairs are strictly banned downstairs (must be left in the buggy park).

Under 5s

They might find the initial dark descent and loud noises of the ride slightly intimidating, but they almost always end up loving the animatronic animals.

Ages 5–12

The absolute sweet spot. They will love spotting the funny details on the ride, participating in Viking coin striking, and giggling at the gross-out smells.

Teens

While they might think they are too cool for the ride, the interactive touchscreens in the galleries and the gruesome facts of Viking life are genuinely fascinating.

🔍 The Glass Floor

Before boarding the ride, you walk directly over a suspended glass floor looking down at the actual excavated remains of 1,000-year-old timber houses.

🏺 Artefact Galleries

Home to pristine preserved leather shoes, iron weapons, beautifully carved combs, and the world-famous fossilised Viking dropping.

🛡️ Live Vikings

Friendly actors dressed in historically accurate Norse clothing are always roaming the galleries to answer questions and demonstrate ancient crafts.

🟢 9:00 am – 10:00 am

The "Early Bird" slot. Quiet, peaceful, and the absolute best time to soak in the galleries without feeling rushed by the crowds.

🟡 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Calming Down. The large coach tours and loud school groups generally depart the city centre for the day, leaving the attraction much more relaxed.

🔴 10:30 am – 2:30 pm

Peak Chaos. Expect packed galleries, high noise levels, and a lot of excited energy from overlapping primary school educational trips.

Coppergate / City Centre

You can't get closer than this. You are waking up practically on top of the Viking excavations and surrounded by high street shops.

The Riverside (Ouse)

Located just a few minutes walk away, offering beautiful views and excellent access to river cruises and waterside dining.

Walmgate

The best area for foodies. Packed with independent restaurants, cafes, and slightly more budget-friendly hotel options nearby.

Pedestrianised Zone

Do not attempt to drive right to the Coppergate Shopping Centre. The surrounding streets are strictly pedestrianised. For reliable parking, use the Castle Car Park (about a 5-minute walk away next to Clifford's Tower) or utilize one of the six local Park & Ride services on the city outskirts.
