A Brief History of York Art Gallery
From Industrial Exhibition to Fine Art Hub
Victorian Origins
The building originally opened in 1879 for the second Yorkshire Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition, later becoming the City Art Gallery in 1892.
The Baedeker Blitz
During World War II, the gallery was severely damaged by a bomb during the Baedeker Blitz of 1942, taking several years to fully repair.
Modern Revival
In 2015, the gallery underwent a major £8 million redevelopment, opening up the beautiful roof space and launching the impressive Centre of Ceramic Art.

The Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA) is undoubtedly the crown jewel of the gallery. Housed in the stunning roof space revealed during the 2015 renovations, it contains the work of over 600 artists and in excess of 5,500 objects. The visual impact of the 17-metre-long Wall of Pots (presenting over 1,000 ceramics), arranged by colour, is completely breathtaking and worth the admission price alone.
