A Brief History of the North Laine

From agricultural fields to bohemian hotspot

🌾

What's in a Name?

The name "Laine" originates from an old Anglo-Saxon word meaning "lease" or "field." Before the 1800s, this entire area was comprised of divided agricultural tracts of land serving the town.

🏭

Victorian Industry

As Brighton rapidly expanded, the fields were filled with crowded housing, slaughterhouses, and factories. It became a bustling, but incredibly cramped, industrial slum.

🏗️

Saved from Demolition

In the 1970s, the entire area was earmarked to be bulldozed for high-rise developments. Thanks to Borough Planning Officer Ken Fines, the area was saved, granted Conservation Area status, and reborn.

Did You Know? Locals will instantly know if you are a tourist if you call it "The North Laines" (plural). It is simply "The North Laine," and it is completely separate from "The Lanes" closer to the seafront!

♻️

Buy Second-Hand

Skip the expensive modern boutiques and head to places like Beyond Retro or Snoopers Attic to find high-quality, pre-loved fashion at a fraction of the high-street cost.

🍽️

Lunch Specials

Many of the incredible vegetarian, vegan, and international food spots down Gardner Street offer great lunch-time deals and takeaway options which are much cheaper than a sit-down dinner.

Nearby Attractions

Right underneath the arches of the railway station at the top of Trafalgar Street, you'll find the enchanting Brighton Toy and Model Museum.

Quirky Shops

Kids love exploring places like Oddballs (packed with juggling and circus equipment) or hunting for small treasures in the massive flea markets.

On weekends, several key streets are closed to traffic, making it much safer to wander with a pram or let older children browse the outdoor tables.

What to See Inside

Trav’s Insider Hack: Prepare for Bric-a-Brac

Trav, the Brighton travel mascot

“Squawk! If you are planning to hit the markets, especially the Saturday market on Upper Gardner Street, remember to bring sturdy, reusable shopping bags! You will almost certainly end up buying something unexpected, and many independent traders try to remain eco-friendly by not supplying plastic bags.”

Brighton Parking Information

Where to leave your car

🚗

Nearest Car Parks (Postcodes)

Brighton is notoriously expensive and difficult for parking, and many roads here are pedestrianised. If you must drive, these are the closest options:

  • Trafalgar Street Car Park: BN1 4DZ — Directly borders the area and is very convenient. It does get busy quickly on weekends.
  • RCP North Road: BN1 1YR — Right in the thick of the action. Perfect for quick access, but spaces are limited.
  • London Road Car Park: BN1 4SR — A slightly further walk (about 10 mins) but usually offers more availability and slightly better daily rates.

If possible, we highly recommend utilising the train, as the station is only a 3-minute walk away!
