A Brief History of the West Pier

From Victorian glory to haunting ruins

🏛️

Victorian Origins

Designed by Eugenius Birch and opened on 6 October 1866, the West Pier was the first pier in Britain to achieve Grade I listed status. It featured a theatre, concert hall and promenade that once attracted over two million visitors a year.

⚠️

Decline and Closure

The pier closed to the public in 1975. Storms and lack of maintenance caused sections to collapse. Two suspected arson attacks in 2003 left the structure in ruins.

🌊

The Ruins Today

Now managed by the West Pier Trust, the skeletal iron framework remains a dramatic offshore landmark and one of the most photographed sights in Brighton.

Did You Know? The West Pier was the second pier in Brighton after the Chain Pier and the first in England to be Grade I listed.
