A Brief History of M Shed
From transit shed to city story museum
1950s Origins
Built as one of Bristol’s port transit sheds in the 1950s, the building was used for cargo storage on the busy docks.
Industrial Museum Era
Later home to the Bristol Industrial Museum, the building was transformed and reopened as M Shed in 2011.
Modern Museum
Now a free museum with around 3,000 artefacts, films and personal stories exploring Bristol’s past and present.
