A Brief History of Bristol Cathedral

From abbey roots to a city centre cathedral

🏛️

Abbey Beginnings

The story begins in 1140, when Robert Fitzharding founded the Abbey of St Augustine on this site, creating a major religious centre for medieval Bristol.

🏗️

Gothic Transformation

Over the centuries the church evolved, with the medieval east end rebuilt in a striking Gothic style. Bristol Cathedral is especially known for its rare hall church design, where the aisles and choir rise to a similar height.

Cathedral Status

In 1542, following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the former abbey church became Bristol Cathedral, serving as the seat of the Bishop of Bristol.

Did You Know? College Green takes its name from the cathedral's collegiate foundations, which shaped the area around the cathedral after it became a cathedral in the 16th century.
