A Brief History of the Cambridge University Botanic Garden
From city centre physic garden to world-class collection
Henslow's Vision
In 1831 Professor John Stevens Henslow, Charles Darwin's mentor, persuaded the University to create a new botanic garden on a 40-acre site south of the city centre.
Darwin Connection
The garden opened to the public in 1846. Henslow's ideas on plant variation and species directly influenced Darwin's work on evolution.
Modern Collections
Today the garden holds over 8,000 plant species and supports world-leading research and teaching while remaining a beautiful public space.
