Cambridge Mathematical Bridge Guide & Reviews (2026)

The Mathematical Bridge is one of Cambridge's most photographed landmarks and a must-see for anyone visiting the city. This elegant wooden footbridge spans the River Cam at Queens' College and is famous for its clever geometric design and the popular (but false) legend that it was built without any nails or bolts by Sir Isaac Newton. Understanding the small entry fee to cross it, knowing where to find convenient Cambridge parking, and discovering the best nearby spots will help you plan a completely stress-free day out.

A Brief History of the Mathematical Bridge

From clever geometry to tourist legend

📐

Designed in 1748

William Etheridge designed the bridge in 1748. It was built the following year by James Essex using only straight timbers locked together with iron pins to form a perfect arch.

🔨

Rebuilt in 1905

The bridge was rebuilt in 1905 to the exact same design after earlier repairs in 1866. It still uses the original engineering principles.

🧠

The Newton Myth

Legend claims Isaac Newton built it without nails or bolts and that students dismantled it and could not reassemble it. In reality the myth is false and the bridge has always used iron pins.

Did You Know? The bridge has never officially been called the "Mathematical Bridge". The name first appeared in a tourist guide in 1803.
