The Edes’ Open House
Jim and Helen Ede created Kettle’s Yard as a home where people (especially students) could experience art in a relaxed, domestic setting, not a formal gallery atmosphere.
Gift to the University
In 1966, the Edes gifted the house and its contents to the University of Cambridge, securing Kettle’s Yard as a permanent public cultural space.
1970 Gallery, 2018 Reopening
An extension and exhibition gallery opened in 1970, and the house and gallery later reopened in 2018 after a major redevelopment that improved visitor facilities.
