A Brief History of Canterbury Cathedral

From early Christian roots to modern pilgrimage site

St Augustine's Foundation

Founded in 597 AD by St Augustine, sent by Pope Gregory the Great to convert the Anglo-Saxons. It became the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

🗡️

Becket's Martyrdom

In 1170, Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered inside the Cathedral by knights of King Henry II. His shrine became one of medieval Europe's most important pilgrimage sites.

🏆

UNESCO Heritage

Part of the Canterbury Cathedral, St Augustine's Abbey and St Martin's Church World Heritage Site since 1988, representing over 1,400 years of Christian history.

Did You Know? Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales was inspired by pilgrims travelling to the shrine of Thomas Becket.

Peaceful Strolling. Arriving at opening (10:00 am weekdays) lets you enjoy the space before coach groups arrive.

High Energy. Between 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm, especially weekends and school holidays, the nave can feel busy.
