A Brief History of Westgate Gardens

From medieval meadows to public park

🏞️

Medieval Origins

In the 15th century this area was a series of gardens and a hay meadow beside the River Stour. Locals and the Priory fought over ownership until the city won the land in 1500.

🌳

Victorian & Modern Era

The gardens were formalised in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1936 the Williamson family donated Tower House and its grounds to the city, creating the public park we enjoy today.

🪨

Roman & Civil War Links

The park follows the line of the old Roman city wall and Watling Street crossed the Stour here. Remnants of the medieval wall and a folly arch remain.

Did You Know? The magnificent Oriental Plane tree in the gardens is over 200 years old and one of the most photographed trees in Canterbury.
