A Brief History of the Minack Theatre

From cliff garden to world-famous theatre

🏞️

Rowena Cade's Vision

In the 1920s Rowena Cade bought the headland for £100 and offered her garden for a local production of The Tempest in 1932, using the sea as a natural backdrop.

🪨

Hand-Carved Creation

With local craftsmen, Rowena carved seating and stage from the granite cliff over many winters, turning a rocky outcrop into an open-air arena.

🌟

Ongoing Legacy

Rowena continued improving the theatre until her death in 1983. Today it hosts live performances from Easter to October and welcomes thousands of visitors year-round.

Did You Know? The very first performance in 1932 was Shakespeare's The Tempest, with the Atlantic Ocean providing a dramatic natural stage.
