A Brief History of the Lost Gardens of Heligan

From Victorian splendour to a world-famous restoration

🏡

The Tremayne Estate

Heligan’s gardens were developed over generations by the Tremayne family, with productive walled gardens, formal planting, and woodland walks that reflect 19th-century tastes.

🌿

The Lost Years

After the First World War, large parts of the estate were neglected and gradually swallowed by brambles and woodland growth, leaving many garden features hidden for decades.

🛠️

Re-awakened in 1990

Rediscovered in 1990, Heligan became one of Europe’s largest garden restoration projects and opened to the public at Easter 1992, with ongoing work continuing ever since.

Did You Know? Heligan is famous for its Victorian Pineapple Pit (a heated growing system) and its iconic living sculptures, including the Mud Maid and the Giant’s Head.

Is the Lost Gardens of Heligan Expensive?

Trav's Wallet Score

TRAV’S WALLET SCORE: 7.5/10 (Pricey)

Squawk! Tickets are not cheap, but Heligan is huge. If you give yourself at least 4 hours (or a full day), the cost feels far more worthwhile. Pack comfy shoes and take your time.

Who Should Visit?

Is it right for your itinerary?

WHO WILL LOVE IT

  • Garden lovers: Victorian walled gardens, rare planting, and seasonal colour everywhere you look.
  • Families: Loads of space to roam, wildlife, and plenty of “wow” moments, especially in the Jungle.
  • Walkers and photographers: Woodland trails, hidden corners, and iconic sculptures make it very camera-friendly.

WHO MIGHT HATE IT

  • Anyone short on time: A rushed visit means you will miss big sections of the estate.
  • Ultra-tight budgets: Ticket prices are on the higher side, so it is best when you can make a proper day of it.

Visiting With Kids

Is Heligan family-friendly?

🗺️

Treasure Hunt Energy

Heligan works brilliantly as an “explore and discover” day. The living sculptures and hidden garden features keep kids curious.

🌴

The Jungle

The Jungle is a guaranteed highlight for children. Expect big leaves, steamy vibes, and that “how is this England?” feeling.

🥪

Picnic Friendly

Bring snacks and water. The estate is large, and having a picnic plan makes the day smoother (especially with little legs).

What to See at Heligan

Unmissable highlights

🌴 The Jungle

A subtropical valley packed with tree ferns, lush greenery, and an adventurous feel that sets Heligan apart from most UK gardens.

🧝 Mud Maid & Giant’s Head

Heligan’s iconic living sculptures are genuinely magical in person and make for some of the best photos on the entire route.

🥕 Productive Gardens

Beautiful Victorian walled gardens growing fruit, veg, and flowers, with a real “working estate” atmosphere rather than a museum feel.

Quieter again. After about 3:00 pm, footfall often eases. Just keep an eye on seasonal last-entry times.

Trav’s Insider Hack: Jungle First

Trav, the Cornwall travel mascot
