A Brief History of Sudeley Castle
From medieval fortress to Tudor treasure
Medieval Beginnings
Construction began in 1443 for Ralph Boteler, Lord High Treasurer. The castle was later seized by the Crown and passed through the hands of Edward IV and Richard III.
Tudor Connections
Henry VIII visited with Anne Boleyn in 1535. Katherine Parr, his last wife, lived and died here in 1548 and is buried in St Mary's Chapel - the only queen buried in a private English castle.
Victorian Restoration
The Dent-Brocklehurst family restored the castle in the 19th century. Today it remains their family home while welcoming visitors to explore its rich history.
