A Brief History of Durham Castle
From Norman stronghold to living university college
Norman Foundations
Built in 1072 on the orders of William the Conqueror to control the rebellious north. The massive motte and bailey design still dominates the peninsula today.
Prince-Bishops Era
Home to the powerful Prince-Bishops who ruled County Durham almost like kings. The castle grew grander with each century of their wealth and influence.
University College
Since 1837 it has been the home of University College, the oldest college of Durham University. Students still live and dine in its medieval halls.
