Standing proudly on Palace Green beside its famous cathedral twin, Durham Castle is one of the most atmospheric Norman strongholds in Britain. Built in 1072 and lived in ever since, this is no dusty museum but a working college of Durham University. Knowing the Durham Castle ticket prices, where to park, and what to expect on the guided tour will make your visit truly memorable, especially if you have ever wanted to step inside a real medieval fortress still buzzing with student life.

A Brief History of Durham Castle

From Norman stronghold to living university college

🏰

Norman Foundations

Built in 1072 on the orders of William the Conqueror to control the rebellious north. The massive motte and bailey design still dominates the peninsula today.

👑

Prince-Bishops Era

Home to the powerful Prince-Bishops who ruled County Durham almost like kings. The castle grew grander with each century of their wealth and influence.

🎓

University College

Since 1837 it has been the home of University College, the oldest college of Durham University. Students still live and dine in its medieval halls.

Did You Know? I always smile when I remember standing in the Great Hall and realising students eat their formal dinners under the same timber roof that once hosted Prince-Bishop banquets.
