A Brief History of Hill Top

From farmhouse to literary landmark

🏠

17th-Century Origins

A traditional Lake District stone farmhouse built in the 1600s, typical of the working farms that dot the fells around Near Sawrey.

🐰

Beatrix Potter's Purchase

In 1905 Beatrix Potter bought Hill Top with the royalties from The Tale of Peter Rabbit. She used it as her writing retreat and filled it with treasures.

🌳

Legacy to the Nation

Beatrix left the house and her 15 farms to the National Trust in 1943. It has been preserved exactly as she left it for visitors to enjoy.

Did You Know? Beatrix Potter married local solicitor William Heelis in 1913 and moved next door to Castle Cottage, but kept Hill Top as her studio.
