A Brief History of Dove Cottage
From alehouse to poetic haven
17th Century Origins
Built around 1700 as a modest Lakeland cottage, it later served as a small alehouse known as The Dove before becoming the Wordsworths' home.
The Wordsworth Years
In December 1799 William and Dorothy moved in. Here William wrote many of his most famous poems including 'I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud' while Dorothy kept her detailed Grasmere Journal.
Literary Legacy
The family lived here until 1808 when growing numbers forced a move to Allan Bank. The cottage remains exactly as it was in their day, low ceilings and all.
