From private pleasure grounds to National Trust gem
Georgian Origins
The Howard family of Greystoke Castle created the pleasure grounds in the late 18th century, landscaping the gorge and planting specimen trees.
Victorian Bridges
Ornate stone bridges were added in the 19th century, including the famous lower bridge that offers the best view of the 65-foot drop.
Literary Links
William Wordsworth drew inspiration here and set part of his poem 'The Somnambulist' at Aira Force.

What to See at Aira Force
Highlights of the walk
The Waterfall
The 65-foot drop thunders through the gorge. On my last visit the spray created a perfect rainbow in the afternoon sun.
Victorian Bridges
Cross the ornate stone bridges for the best close-up views. The lower one is especially dramatic.
Arboretum & Woodland
Look for towering specimen trees planted in the 19th century and listen for red squirrels in the canopy.

When to expect the biggest queues
🟢 Early Mornings
Peaceful Strolling. Arrive as the gates open for misty light and almost no one around.
🔴 Midday Rush
High Energy. Weekends and school holidays see coach groups between 11am and 3pm.
🟡 Late Afternoons
A Gentle Buzz. Crowds thin after 3pm and the light on the waterfall is often magical.
