A Brief History of The Cavern
From jazz cellar to rock and roll royalty
Jazz Roots
Opening in 1957, the venue was initially designed to be a pure jazz club, heavily inspired by the cellar venues of Paris. Rock and roll was strictly forbidden in the early days!
The Beatle Years
The Beatles made their first appearance here in 1961 and went on to play 292 gigs in the sweaty, crowded arches, transforming it into the centre of the Merseybeat scene.
The Rebuild
The original club closed in 1973 and was filled in during Merseyrail construction work. It reopened in 1984, rebuilt on around 70% of the original footprint using thousands of reclaimed bricks to preserve the atmosphere.
