A Brief History of the Museum

From the Derby collection to a global institution

🦅

The Derby Bequest

The museum originally began in 1851 after the 13th Earl of Derby donated his massive, personal natural history collection to the city of Liverpool.

🏛️

A New Home

By 1860, the collection had grown so much that it was moved to its current, purpose-built classical building on William Brown Street.

🔥

Surviving the Blitz

Tragically, the museum suffered a direct hit during the May Blitz of 1941, destroying many artefacts. It was carefully rebuilt and vastly expanded in the decades that followed.

Did You Know? The museum was known simply as the 'Liverpool Museum' until it was rebranded as the 'World Museum' in 2005.

Café Savings

While entry is free, the on-site café can be pricey. Bringing your own packed lunch to eat in the designated indoor picnic area is a huge money-saver.

🎫

National Art Pass

If there are any special touring exhibitions that carry an entry fee, National Art Pass holders often secure heavily reduced entry.

🚇

Merseyrail Perks

Keep an eye on Merseyrail ticket offers. Sometimes producing a valid train ticket for the day can get you discounts in the museum gift shop.

Who Should Visit?

  • Budget Travellers: A world-class attraction that costs absolutely nothing to enter.

WHO MIGHT HATE IT

Visiting With Kids

Is the museum family-friendly?

🕷️

The Bug House

Children are fascinated by the live colonies here. I will never forget the slightly unnerving but fascinating earthy scent of the Bug House and watching the mesmerising leafcutter ant trail.

🚀

Planetarium

Perfect for young astronauts. They run brilliant, family-friendly shows that explain the solar system in a visual, highly engaging way.

🐠

The Aquarium

Located on the ground floor, the aquarium features fish from all over the globe, providing an instant hit of colour right as you begin your visit.

What to See Inside

Highlights of the museum

🏺 Ancient Egypt

One of the largest collections of Egyptian antiquities in the UK, featuring intricate mummies and fascinating insights into ancient burial rituals.

🦖 Dinosaurs

Walking into the natural history floor and coming face-to-face with the towering dinosaur skeletons is a truly awe-inspiring moment.

🌍 World Cultures

An incredible gallery showcasing artefacts from Africa, the Americas, and Oceania, highlighting global diversity and artistry.

Peak Crowd Heatmap

When to expect the biggest queues

🟢 Early Mornings

Peaceful Browsing. Getting there for 10:00 am on a weekday usually guarantees you the Ancient Egypt gallery almost entirely to yourself.

🔴 Midday Rush

High Energy. From 11:30 am to 2:30 pm, especially on rainy Saturdays, the lifts get busy and the main halls echo with crowds.

🟡 Late Afternoons

A Gentle Buzz. Arriving after 3:00 pm gives you a solid two hours to explore while the larger school groups head home.

Trav’s Insider Hack: Ditch the Coats

Trav, the Liverpool travel mascot

“Squawk! Finding the somewhat hidden lockers down in the basement area is a game-changer. The museum spans five floors and it gets incredibly warm inside. Lock away your heavy jackets and bags before you start climbing those stairs!”

  • St John's Shopping Centre: L1 1NQ - A highly central and relatively affordable option right next to Lime Street station.
