A Brief History of the Walker Art Gallery
From local vision to national treasure
Victorian Origins
The gallery opened its doors to the public in 1877, largely funded by Andrew Barclay Walker, a wealthy local brewer and former Mayor of Liverpool who wanted to gift art to the city.
Major Extensions
As the collection grew, the Walker expanded over time. Notable building extensions opened in 1884 and again in 1933 after a closure to allow new space to be built, helping the gallery display a much broader range of works.
National Status
In 1986, it achieved national status as part of the National Museums group in Liverpool, cementing its reputation as having one of the most important collections in the UK outside of London.
