A Brief History of The Shard

From visionary design to modern icon

📐

Visionary Design

Dreamt up by property developer Irvine Sellar and brought to life by Italian architect Renzo Piano. Piano drew the initial concept on a restaurant menu, inspired by the railway lines and church spires of London.

🏗️

Construction Marvel

Work began in 2009. The towering 309.6 metre structure requires an incredible 11,000 individual glass panels, which is enough to cover eight entire football pitches.

🦊

Romeo the Fox

During the intense construction phase, a brave fox was discovered living up on the 72nd floor. Nicknamed Romeo by the builders, he happily survived on scraps left behind by the workers.

Did You Know? The public toilets on level 68 feature floor to ceiling windows, offering arguably the best bathroom view on the entire planet!

  • Architecture Fans: The engineering behind this vertical city is truly mesmerising.

WHO MIGHT HATE IT

Visiting With Kids

🚀

Rocket Lifts

The lifts travel at a staggering 6 metres per second. It feels like an amusement park ride and will definitely make their ears pop!

🚂

Toy Town Views

Looking down from over 300 metres high makes London look exactly like a miniature toy set. Kids love spotting the tiny trains at London Bridge.

The viewing platforms feature interactive touch screen telescopes that help younger visitors easily identify famous landmarks far below.

What to See Inside

Highlights of the viewing gallery

My ears actually popped in the high speed lift on the way up to the 68th floor! Stepping out and seeing the River Thames wind through the dense city blocks is a view I will never forget. I highly recommend looking straight down to spot the tiny trains pulling into London Bridge station like toy sets.

☁️ Level 69 Gallery

The triple height main indoor viewing platform, offering pristine 360-degree views stretching across the entirety of London.

🥂 Champagne Bars

Grab a glass of bubbly or a hot chocolate from the bar to enjoy while you lean against the glass and watch the city move below.

🌬️ Level 72 Skydeck

Note: Closed during Feb–May 2026 maintenance. Normally the highest accessible point, partially open to the elements.

Peak Crowd Heatmap

When to expect the biggest queues

🟢 Morning Slots

Crystal Clear. Arriving near opening usually guarantees thinner crowds and excellent visibility for photos.

🔴 Golden Hour

High Demand. The hour leading up to sunset is incredibly popular. Book well in advance.

🟡 Evening Glow

Romantic Buzz. After sunset, the platforms fill with couples and groups admiring the illuminated bridges and glowing skyline.

Best Areas to Stay Near The Shard

Top neighbourhoods for venue access

London Bridge

Staying right in this area puts you at the foot of the building. You are surrounded by great pubs, cafes, and brilliant transport links.

The Southbank

A culturally rich riverside stretch. Staying here means you can enjoy a lovely, flat walk to The Shard passing many other attractions.

The City of London

Just across London Bridge on the north side of the river. It offers sleek hotels and puts you within a fast 10 minute walk of the entrance.

London Parking Information

Where to leave your car

🚗

Nearest Car Parks

Driving into central London is rarely advised due to traffic and the Congestion Charge, and The Shard has no public parking of its own. However, if you must drive, consider these nearby options:

  • NCP London Bridge (Kipling St): SE1 3RU - Just a 5 minute walk from the entrance.
  • Snowsfields NCP: SE1 3SU - Another solid option very close to the building.
  • Union Car Parks (Southwark St): SE1 1RU - Roughly a 10 minute walk away.

We highly recommend using public transport instead. London Bridge underground and rail station is literally underneath the building, making it by far the easiest way to arrive.
