Newcastle Victoria Tunnel Guide & Reviews (2026)

Descending into the Victoria Tunnel is one of the most atmospheric experiences in Newcastle. This 19th-century coal wagonway runs for over two miles beneath the city and was later used as a huge air-raid shelter during the Blitz. Having walked it myself, the cool, damp air hits you the moment you step inside and the way your voice echoes really transports you back in time. Understanding the Victoria Tunnel ticket prices, knowing where to find convenient Newcastle parking, and discovering the best nearby spots will help you plan a completely stress-free day out.

A Brief History of the Victoria Tunnel

From coal wagonway to wartime shelter

🚂

Victorian Engineering

Built between 1839 and 1842 to carry coal from Spital Tongues Colliery down to the River Tyne. The wagons ran downhill by gravity and were hauled back up by rope.

🛡️

WWII Air-Raid Shelter

During the Second World War the southern section was converted into one of the largest public shelters in the country, capable of holding up to 9,000 people.

🔦

Preserved Today

A 700-metre section is now open for guided tours run by the Ouseburn Trust volunteers who bring the stories of miners and Blitz families vividly to life.

Did You Know? The tunnel is a constant 11 degrees Celsius all year round - perfect for keeping cool on a hot Newcastle day or warming up on a chilly one.
