Opened in 1884 to house the growing natural history collections of the Natural History Society of Northumbria, named after local naturalist John Hancock.

Closed in 2006 for a £26 million transformation, reopening in 2009 as the Great North Museum: Hancock after merging with Newcastle University collections.
