A Brief History of the Laing Art Gallery
From generous gift to city treasure
Generous Beginnings
Opened in 1904 thanks to a generous donation from local businessman Alexander Laing, the gallery was built to celebrate his 50 years in Newcastle.
Edwardian Architecture
Designed in Baroque style with Art Nouveau details by architects Cackett & Burns Dick, the building is now Grade II listed and a city landmark.
Growing Collection
Over the years it has built a strong focus on British and Northern artists, including dramatic works by John Martin and Pre-Raphaelite pieces.
