A Brief History of the Laing Art Gallery

From generous gift to city treasure

🏛️

Generous Beginnings

Opened in 1904 thanks to a generous donation from local businessman Alexander Laing, the gallery was built to celebrate his 50 years in Newcastle.

🖼️

Edwardian Architecture

Designed in Baroque style with Art Nouveau details by architects Cackett & Burns Dick, the building is now Grade II listed and a city landmark.

🎨

Growing Collection

Over the years it has built a strong focus on British and Northern artists, including dramatic works by John Martin and Pre-Raphaelite pieces.

Did You Know? The first time I walked through the marble entrance hall on a quiet weekday morning, the light pouring in made the whole space feel magical.
