A Brief History of Oxford Castle & Prison

From Norman stronghold to modern attraction

🏰

Norman Origins

Built in 1071 by Robert d'Oyly, a close ally of William the Conqueror, on the site of a former Saxon settlement to control the western approach to Oxford.

🔒

Prison Years

After the English Civil War most of the castle was destroyed; the remaining buildings served as Oxford's county prison from the 18th century until its closure in 1996.

🗼

St George's Tower

One of the oldest surviving structures in Oxford, this Saxon-Norman tower offers 360-degree views over the famous dreaming spires.

Did You Know? The site includes the only surviving medieval castle mound in Oxford and was once completely cut off from the city by its walls.
