Stonehenge Visitor Centre Guide & Reviews (2026)
The Stonehenge Visitor Centre is where every visit starts. It is your base for parking, tickets, the Stonehenge exhibition, and the outdoor Neolithic Houses, before you hop on the shuttle or walk out across the fields to the Stone Circle. Knowing the latest opening times, understanding ticket pricing, and planning for parking (yes, there is a separate fee for non-members) makes the whole day feel calmer, especially when the coaches roll in.

A Brief History of the Stonehenge Visitor Centre
The modern gateway to an ancient landscape
Context Before the Stones
Stonehenge itself is far older than any museum building, but the visitor centre is designed to give you the story first, so the Stone Circle feels less like a photo stop and more like a place with people behind it.
Opened in 2013
The current visitor centre opened in December 2013, bringing proper exhibition space, better facilities, and a calmer arrival point away from the monument field.
Living History Outside
Outside the building, the Neolithic Houses are the bit kids remember. You will often spot volunteers demonstrating ancient crafts and cooking, which makes the whole place feel more human.
Is Stonehenge Visitor Centre Expensive?
Trav's Wallet Score
TRAV’S WALLET SCORE:
(Note: For the 'How Expensive' rating, the lower the number, the cheaper it is!)
Squawk! The cheapest slots are usually weekday, off-peak times. If you can, book ahead, aim for an early slot, and do the exhibition first so you are not trying to read panels while a coach tour is stacking up behind you.
Pricing & Event Tickets
Standard admission rates

Tickets are timed, and it is usually cheaper to book in advance. For early March 2026 (and the broader 2025/26 season pricing), general admission commonly ranges depending on date and demand. Also note: there is a £3 parking charge for non-members.

Visiting With Kids
Is it family-friendly?
Neolithic Houses
The outdoor houses are a brilliant reset button after the exhibition. Kids can picture daily life, not just the stones, which helps the whole story click.
360 Experience
The immersive 360 show is a great way to understand the solstice alignment and seasons, and it is also a handy warm-up before you head out into the open air.
Dress for the Plain
Bring a layer even if it looks bright. The walk and viewing areas are exposed, and the wind can be the main character on Salisbury Plain.
What to See at the Visitor Centre
The best bits before you head to the Stone Circle
Stonehenge Exhibition
A world-class exhibition with over 250 objects from the landscape, alongside multimedia displays that explain what we know (and what we still debate) about the site.
360 Experience
An audio-visual 360 view from inside the stones, showing how the seasons change and why timing matters for light, alignment, and atmosphere.
Neolithic Houses
Step into reconstructed houses and look out for live demos. It is one of the easiest ways to imagine real people behind the monument.
Peak Crowd Heatmap
When to expect the biggest queues
🟢 Early Mornings
Best atmosphere. The first timed slots are usually calmer, and you are not jostling for space in the exhibition.
🔴 Midday Rush
Coach peak. Late morning to early afternoon is when the site can feel busiest, especially in school holidays.
🟡 Late Afternoons
Quieter, but watch the clock. It can be calmer later on, but remember the last entry and shuttle cut-offs so you do not have to sprint back.
Trav’s Insider Hack: Walk Back Through the Barrows
“Squawk! If the weather behaves, consider taking the shuttle out and walking back. The return route is well-marked and you pass burial mounds with interpretation panels. Give yourself 25 to 40 minutes, wear sturdy shoes, and keep an eye on closing times.”
