A Brief History of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre

From memorial to modern masterpiece

🏛️

Early Days

The original Shakespeare Memorial Theatre opened in 1879. A devastating fire in 1926 destroyed much of it, leading to the iconic 1932 rebuild.

🔨

Major Transformation

Between 2007 and 2010 the theatre underwent a £112 million transformation, creating the thrust stage that brings audiences closer to the action than ever before.

🎭

RSC Legacy

Today it is the flagship home of the Royal Shakespeare Company, staging world-class productions that continue the tradition started over a century ago.

Did You Know? The thrust stage design means no seat is more than 15 metres from the action - a feature I still find breathtaking every single visit.

Is the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Expensive?

Trav's Wallet Score

TRAV’S WALLET SCORE: 4.5/10 (Affordable)

(Note: For the 'How Expensive' rating, the lower the number, the cheaper it is!)

Trav, the Stratford travel mascot

Squawk! Wandering the riverside terrace and public foyers is completely free. The real magic starts when you add a show or tour - still excellent value for such world-class theatre.
