The MAD Museum Visitor Guide & Reviews (2026)

The MAD Museum is Stratford-upon-Avon’s best little curveball. Everyone comes for Shakespeare, then you duck into this compact, hands-on space filled with kinetic art, automata, and satisfyingly clacky machines that you can actually operate. It sits above Lakeland on Henley Street, so you will know you are close when you spot the shopfront and the shared entrance just off the pavement. Plan your visit with the latest ticket prices, opening times, accessibility notes, and the most convenient nearby parking options.

A Brief History of The MAD Museum

From a family dream to a Henley Street favourite

🛠️

Launched in 2012

The museum opened in March 2012 as a passion project built around mechanical art, design, and moving sculpture. It quickly became a proper rainy day lifesaver in a town that is usually all about Tudor timber and theatre tickets.

🏠

Moved to Henley Street

It started out on Sheep Street, then moved to its current spot on Henley Street in 2013. Today it is just a short stroll from Shakespeare’s Birthplace, so it is easy to slot into a town centre wander.

⚙️

Interactive by Design

Unlike a traditional museum where you keep your hands in your pockets, MAD is built for interaction. Expect whirring gears, rolling balls, and the kind of satisfying clicks that make both kids and grown-ups grin without realising it.

Local tip: If you are scanning Henley Street and cannot spot it, look for Lakeland and the shared entrance, then head up to the first floor. It feels a bit like finding a secret level in a game.

Is The MAD Museum Expensive?

Trav's Wallet Score

TRAV’S WALLET SCORE: 3.5/10 (Budget-friendly)

(Note: For the 'How Expensive' rating, the lower the number, the cheaper it is!)

Trav, the Stratford-upon-Avon travel mascot

Squawk! For a town centre attraction, this one is refreshingly kind on the wallet. It is the sort of place where you can spend an hour happily pressing buttons and turning cranks, then pop straight back out onto Henley Street for a coffee.

Who Should Visit?

Is it right for your itinerary?

WHO WILL LOVE IT

  • Families: Loads of hands-on exhibits, with plenty of buttons to press and wheels to turn.
  • Engineers and makers: Gears, pulleys, rolling ball runs, and clever mechanisms that reward a slow look.
  • Anyone bored of the usual: It is a perfect palate cleanser between Shakespeare houses and shopping.

WHO MIGHT HATE IT

  • People who hate noise: It is full of movement and sound, which is half the fun, but not everyone’s idea of calm.
  • Pushchair-heavy days: The museum is compact, so busy periods can be awkward with pushchairs (there is storage at the entrance, though).

Visiting With Kids

Is the museum family-friendly?

🧠

Hands-On Learning

It is sneaky education. Kids end up talking about motion, forces, and cause-and-effect without feeling like they are in a lesson.

🧒

Supervision Rules

Children under 16 need to be accompanied by a supervising adult at all times. This is a mechanical museum, so staff take safety seriously.

🍼

Pushchairs

On busy days the museum may not be able to accommodate pushchairs because it is relatively small. There is pushchair storage at street level, and you can store bags upstairs near reception.

What to See Inside

Highlights of the museum

🔁 Rolling Ball Machines

Look out for the mesmerising rolling ball contraptions. They are the ones that make you say “just one more run” and suddenly ten minutes has disappeared.

🤖 Automata & Kinetic Art

From clever automata to beautifully made moving sculptures, there is plenty here that sits right on the line between art and engineering.

🎬 The Breather Corner

If you need a quick reset, there is seating available, and the museum has areas where you can pause, watch, and let the crowds flow past before diving back in.

Peak Crowd Heatmap

When to expect the biggest queues

🟢 Weekday Mornings

Best flow. Early weekdays are usually the sweet spot, especially if you want space to linger at the most popular machines.

🔴 Weekends & Wet Weather

Busy and compact. Stratford gets packed on weekends, and this is a classic wet-weather escape, so it can feel tight when the town is heaving.

🟡 School Holidays

High energy. Expect lots of excited kids and longer waits for the most interactive exhibits. If you are visiting with a pushchair, aim for quieter times.

Trav’s Insider Hack: Plan for the Small Space

Trav, the Stratford-upon-Avon travel mascot

“Squawk! MAD is brilliantly compact. If you want the best experience, go midweek or early, and if you have a pushchair, be ready to park it in the entrance storage and travel light. Also, last admission is 45 minutes before closing, so do not cut it too fine!”
