A Brief History of Prior Park

An 18th-century masterpiece

🏛️

Ralph Allen's Vision

The garden was created in the 18th century by local entrepreneur Ralph Allen, to complement his magnificent mansion and showcase the beautiful Bath stone he mined.

🌳

Capability Brown

Famous landscape architect Lancelot 'Capability' Brown helped shape the valley, turning it into the sweeping, naturalistic landscape you see today.

🌉

The Palladian Bridge

Added in 1755, this stunning architectural feature is one of only four bridges of this design left in the world, acting as the jewel of the lakes.

Did You Know? The poet Alexander Pope gave Ralph Allen extensive advice on the garden's layout, ensuring it perfectly captured the romantic ideals of the period.

Visiting Prior Park with Kids

Will children actually enjoy the garden?

👶

Toddlers

There is plenty of grass for them to run around on, but be warned: pushing a standard pram back up the steep valley hill is an exhausting workout!

They will love the wilder woodland paths, bug hunting near the lakes, and spotting the local cows that sometimes graze in the lower fields.

📱

Teens

The iconic Palladian Bridge is highly photogenic and offers great backdrops for their social media, especially on a bright, sunny afternoon.

What to See Inside Prior Park

Highlights of the landscape garden

🌉 The Palladian Bridge

The undisputed star of the show. Built in 1755, it crosses the lower lakes and creates a perfect, romantic reflection in the water.

🔭 The Cabinet

A beautifully restored viewpoint at the top of the garden that offers arguably the most famous, sweeping panorama over the city of Bath.

🦆 The Lakes & Cascades

Wander down to the bottom of the combe to see the restored dams and enjoy the tranquil sound of water cascading through the landscape.

The Steep Valley Walk

Are you prepared for the hills?

🥾

It cannot be overstated: Prior Park is set within a very steep valley. While the walk down from the entrance to the Palladian Bridge is easy and scenic, the walk back up requires a reasonable level of fitness. Wear sensible, sturdy shoes, take your time, and use the benches provided to catch your breath while enjoying the view!

Prior Park Crowd Heatmap

The best and worst times to visit

🟢 10:00 am to 11:30 am

Morning Peace. Arriving just as it opens guarantees quiet paths and empty photographs on the Palladian Bridge.

🟡 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Late Afternoon. The bulk of the daytime crowds begin their trek back up the hill, leaving the lower lakes relatively serene.

🔴 12:00 pm to 2:30 pm

Peak Chaos. The busiest time, especially on sunny weekends. The pathways can feel slightly congested, and seating is scarce.

Trav’s Insider Hack: The Skyline Walk

Trav, the Bath travel mascot

“Squawk! Make a full day of it by combining Prior Park with the famous Bath Skyline Walk. The six mile circular route is very close to the garden, so you can easily link the two and earn your evening meal!”

Top neighbourhoods for garden access

Widcombe

Located right at the bottom of the hill. A charming high street with great pubs, making it the perfect base to walk up to the garden.

The best all-rounder. You have all the main historical sights on your doorstep, and you can simply catch the short bus ride up to the park.

Prior Park Parking Information

Also note that there is no parking at Prior Park College (it shares the same postcode but is not part of the National Trust).

Accessible parking: there is very limited on site accessible parking for Blue Badge holders, and it needs to be pre-booked. Call 01225 833422 to check availability before you travel.
