A Brief History of Pulteney Bridge
A Georgian Masterpiece
The Mastermind
The bridge was designed in 1769 by the famous neoclassical architect Robert Adam, who was inspired by the Ponte Vecchio in Florence and the Rialto Bridge in Venice.
The Pulteney Family
It was commissioned by William Pulteney to connect central Bath to the 600-acre Bathwick estate across the river, sparking a major Georgian housing development.
A Rare Breed
Completed in 1774, it is widely cited as one of only four bridges in the world with shops running across its full span on both sides.

River Cruises & Extras
Exploring below the bridge
Pulteney Cruisers
Small riverboats depart from the steps below the weir for a scenic cruise upriver and back. Note that this service no longer stops at Bathampton, so it is typically a round trip.
Bridge Cafes
A few of the small cafes built into the bridge offer window seats right over the rushing water. It’s worth paying a bit extra for a coffee just for the view.
Parade Gardens
Parade Gardens next door offers manicured lawns and excellent views of the bridge. Entry charges can be seasonal and can change, so check the current status and pricing before you go.

Where to get the perfect photo
To truly appreciate the bridge, you must look at it from the outside. Head to Grand Parade (the street running parallel to the river) for the classic elevated view. For a more dramatic angle, take the stone steps down from Grand Parade to the riverside path right next to the roaring weir.

Pulteney Bridge Parking Information
Where to leave your car
City Centre Parking
Bath can be tricky to drive in due to one-way streets, bus lanes, and the Clean Air Zone (which charges some vehicles). The best option is to use one of the city's Park & Ride services (Lansdown, Odd Down, or Newbridge). Alternatively, the Podium Car Park on Walcot Street is very close, or you can use the larger Charlotte Street Car Park (about a 15-minute walk away).
