A Brief History of the Piers

Victorian seaside engineering

🎩

North Pier (1863)

Designed by Eugenius Birch, the North Pier is the oldest and only Grade II listed pier in Blackpool. It was originally built for high-society Victorian promenading.

🎪

Central Pier (1868)

Nicknamed the "People's Pier", it was opened just five years later with a clear focus on fun, dancing, and amusements for the working-class holidaymakers.

🎢

South Pier (1893)

The shortest and youngest of the three. Originally known as the Victoria Pier, it has evolved into a mini-theme park packed with high-octane rides.

Did You Know? At the end of the North Pier, you can still find a Victorian two-tier Venetian Carousel, beautifully restored and playing traditional organ music.

Who Should Visit the Piers?

Is it right for your itinerary?

WHO WILL LOVE IT

  • Families: Endless games, prizes, candyfloss, and kid-friendly rides.
  • Photographers: North Pier at sunset offers stunning views over the Irish Sea.
  • Thrill Seekers: The rides at the end of South Pier are surprisingly intense.

WHO MIGHT HATE IT

  • The Noise-Averse: Central and South Pier arcades are very loud with flashing lights.
  • Bad Weather Days: Walking the exposed boards during a coastal gale is not fun.
  • Those Scared of Heights: The wooden planks over the roaring sea can unnerve some.

Visiting With Kids

Will children actually enjoy the piers?

👶

Under 8s

They will love Pirate's Bay Family Bar on Central Pier, the small teacup rides, and winning soft toys in the huge arcades.

🧒

Ages 8–12

Perfect for the classic fairground atmosphere. Waltzers, Dodgems, and trying to beat the coin pushers are guaranteed hits.

📱

Teens

Head straight to South Pier. The adrenaline zone features a reverse bungee and a spinning rollercoaster that hangs right over the sea.

What to See on Each Pier

Three unique experiences

🎩 North Pier

The quiet, historic one. Features a beautiful sun lounge, Victorian architecture, a traditional carousel, and is ideal for a peaceful stroll.

🎡 Central Pier

The family fun one. Home to the towering 108ft Ferris Wheel, bustling arcades, and lively family-friendly bars with free entertainment.

🎢 South Pier

The adrenaline one. Packed tightly with high-thrill rides, log flumes, and a Crazy Mouse rollercoaster that spins out over the waves.

The Central Pier Big Wheel

The best views of the coastline?

🎡

If you want to see the entire Blackpool coastline from above, riding the 108ft Big Wheel on Central Pier is a must. For roughly £6, you get a gentle, relaxing ride that offers sweeping views of the famous Blackpool Tower, the Golden Mile, and out across the Irish Sea. It’s particularly magical during the evening Illuminations!

Pier Crowd Heatmap

The best and worst times to visit

🟢 10:00 am – 11:30 am

The "Early Bird" slot. The arcades are quiet, the ride queues are non-existent, and you have plenty of room to walk.

🟡 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Dinner Lull. The peak day-tripper crowds thin out as people head into town for fish and chips, making it a great time for ride-hopping.

🔴 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Peak Chaos. Central and South Piers get heavily congested, especially on sunny weekends and during the school holidays.

Trav’s Insider Hack: Coin Bags

Trav, the Blackpool travel mascot

“Squawk! Don't rely on the change machines in the arcades—they often run out during busy weekends! Go to your local bank or post office before your holiday and ask to change a £10 note into bags of 2p coins. It will keep the kids busy for hours on the penny pushers!”

Best Areas to Stay Near the Piers

Top neighbourhoods for seaside access

North Shore

Quieter, featuring large historic hotels and B&Bs. Best if you prefer the relaxed vibe of North Pier away from the heavy clubbing crowds.

Central Zone

Loud, bright, and highly central. You are waking up right next to the Tower, Central Pier, and the biggest arcades.

South Shore

The best area for thrill-seekers. You have immediate access to both South Pier and the famous Pleasure Beach theme park.

Pier Parking Information

Where to leave your car

🚗

Promenade Parking

Do not expect to find street parking on the Promenade during the summer. Depending on which pier you are visiting, use the Houndshill Shopping Centre Car Park (for Central/North Pier) or the massive South Car Park (for South Pier). Alternatively, park slightly out of town and use the efficient seafront tram network!
