A Brief History of the Royal Pavilion
From humble lodging to royal palace
Georgian Origins
Starting as a modest lodging house in 1787, it was expanded for George, Prince of Wales, who loved the seaside town for its restorative climate and vibrant social scene.
John Nash's Vision
Between 1815 and 1822, architect John Nash completely transformed the building into the incredible Indo-Saracenic palace we see today, complete with domes and minarets.
WWI Hospital
During the First World War, the Pavilion served a very different purpose as a military hospital, primarily treating Indian soldiers who had been wounded on the Western Front.
