A Brief History of the Walk

From coastal defence to leisure route

🧱

The 1930s Sea Defences

Built between 1931 and 1935, the primary purpose of the Undercliff Walk was strictly functional: to construct a massive sea wall to protect the soft chalk cliffs from severe coastal erosion.

🏗️

David Edwards' Design

Designed by the borough surveyor, it took over 500 workers to complete the impressive engineering feat, using 13,000 tons of cement and over 150,000 heavy concrete blocks.

🚴

Modern Restoration

Over the decades, the walkway has been upgraded and reinforced after heavy storm damage. Today, it serves as a stunningly popular leisure route for pedestrians and cyclists alike.

Did You Know? The chalk cliffs you walk underneath are entirely natural, and occasional small chalk falls still happen — making the sea wall as important today as it was in the 1930s.

  • Ice Cream / Snacks: £2.50 - £5.00

Route Highlights

Things to do along the path

🦀

Rockpooling

Check the tide times before you travel! At low tide, the sea retreats to reveal an expansive, rocky beach dotted with pools — perfect for discovering crabs and marine life.

🏘️

Rottingdean Village

About halfway along the walk, take the ramp up the cliff to explore Rottingdean, an historic smugglers' village complete with a charming duck pond and traditional pubs.

🏊

Saltdean Lido

End your walk at the eastern boundary by visiting the iconic, beautifully restored 1930s Art Deco outdoor swimming pool at Saltdean.

Who Should Visit?

Is it right for your itinerary?

WHO WILL LOVE IT

  • Walkers & Cyclists: The flat, uninterrupted route is perfect for stretching your legs.
  • Families: The smooth concrete path is an absolute dream for pushing buggies or letting kids ride scooters.
  • Nature Lovers: Fantastic for seabird watching and fossil hunting at low tide.

WHO MIGHT HATE IT

  • Bad Weather Avoiders: There is zero shelter. During winter storms, heavy waves frequently crash directly over the sea wall.
  • Thrill Seekers: If you want arcade machines and rides, head to Brighton Palace Pier instead.

Visiting With Kids

Is the route family-friendly?

🛴

Scooters & Bikes

The entire 3-mile stretch is paved and mostly flat, making it one of the safest and easiest places in the city for children to ride bikes or scooters away from cars.

🏖️

Beach Exploring

While the beaches are shingle and pebble rather than sand, there are endless opportunities for stone skimming and shell collecting along the shoreline.

🍟

Refreshment Stops

You won't have to worry about sudden toilet emergencies; there are public facilities and family-friendly cafes stationed at Ovingdean, Rottingdean, and Saltdean.

What to See Along the Way

Highlights of the coastal path

Brighton Marina

Watch the yachts and fishing boats navigate the harbour entrance at the western end of the walk. It's a bustling hub of activity.

⛰️ The White Cliffs

The sheer, imposing chalk faces rising sharply on your left-hand side are a breathtaking reminder of the natural coastal geology.

🚇 Historic Tunnels

Look out for the pedestrian tunnel sections carved directly into the rock face near Saltdean, a great architectural nod to the 1930s engineering.

Peak Crowd Heatmap

When to expect the most foot traffic

🟢 Early Mornings

Peaceful Strolling. The perfect time to greet the day as sunlight spills across the sea, long before the crowds arrive.

🟡 Sunny Weekends

A Gentle Buzz. Spring and summer afternoons bring heavy congestion of cyclists, dog walkers, and families enjoying the sun.

🔴 Winter Storms

High Danger. Avoid the path entirely during severe weather or unusually high tides, as the walkway often floods or is officially closed.
