John Cabot's Voyage

The tower commemorates the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's 1497 voyage from Bristol, which later became closely associated with the European discovery of parts of North America.

🏗️

Victorian Architecture

Designed by Bristol architect William Venn Gough, construction began in 1897 and the tower was completed/opened in 1898, built from red sandstone with Bath stone detailing.

🌳

Brandon Hill Park

Brandon Hill is thought to be one of the oldest public parks in the country. It was granted to the council in 1174 and became a public open space by 1625, long before Cabot Tower was added.

Did You Know? The tower is 105 feet tall. To reach the viewing platform, you will need to climb 109 steep spiral steps.

🍂

Autumn Colours

Visiting With Kids

Is Brandon Hill family friendly?

🐿️

Wildlife Spotting

The park is famous for its very friendly grey squirrels. Spotting them is a favourite activity for children walking through the paths.

🪜

The Climb

Older kids will love the adventure of climbing the spiral stairs, but keep a firm grip on little ones as the steps are worn and steep.

🛝

Play Area

There is a designated children’s play area in Brandon Hill (dog-free) where kids can burn off any remaining energy.

What to See

Highlights of the area

🔭 Viewing Platforms

Enjoy uninterrupted views reaching across the floating harbour, Clifton, and all the way out to the Mendip Hills on a clear day.

🌀 The Spiral Staircase

The internal staircase is a feat of Victorian masonry, winding up the centre of the tower with small slit windows offering glimpses outside.

🌸 Brandon Hill Nature Reserve

The nature reserve is an urban wildlife haven created through a partnership between Avon Wildlife Trust and Bristol City Council, with wildflowers, ponds, and great birdlife.

Peak Crowd Heatmap

When to expect the biggest queues

🟢 Early Mornings

Peaceful. Arriving before 10:30 am means you will likely have the viewing platform all to yourself.

🟡 Midday Weekends

Busy Park. The hill fills with picnickers, and you might have to wait on the stairs to let people pass on their way down.

🔴 Summer Sunsets

Highly Congested. Beautiful golden hours draw crowds of photographers, making the narrow staircase a bit of a bottleneck.
