A Brief History of St Augustine's Abbey

From Saxon monastery to legendary ruins

Foundation (AD 598)

Founded by St Augustine in AD 598, the abbey became one of the most important monastic centres in England and a powerful symbol of Christianity’s return to Anglo Saxon Kent.

🏗️

Norman Rebuild

After the Norman Conquest, the monastery was rebuilt on a grand scale, with a vast church and cloisters. Today, the ruins still hint at how enormous the complex once was.

📜

Dissolution (1538)

The abbey was dissolved in 1538 during Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries. Over time, much of the stone was dismantled, leaving the atmospheric remains you can explore now.

Did You Know? St Augustine's Abbey is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that also includes Canterbury Cathedral and St Martin's Church.
