A Brief History of The Beaney

The building takes its name from Dr James George Beaney, who left money for an institute to benefit Canterbury. The city added further funding, helping create a permanent home for local museum and library collections.

🏛️

Opened in 1899

The Beaney Institute building was designed in a striking Tudor Revival style and opened in 1899. Today, it remains one of the most recognisable historic buildings on Canterbury High Street.

🔧

Refurbished and Reopened

The Beaney closed for a major refurbishment and reopened in 2012, bringing updated galleries, improved access, and more space for exhibitions and community use.

Did You Know? The Beaney is a Grade II listed building, recorded by Historic England as the “Public Library and Museum at Beaney Institute”.
