A Brief History of Chester Roman Amphitheatre
Britain’s biggest arena, right by the City Walls
Built for Roman Chester
Built in the late first century AD, the amphitheatre sat just outside the south-east corner of Chester’s Roman legionary fortress and was likely used for entertainment and training drills.
Only Part is Visible
Today, roughly two-fifths of the oval structure is excavated and visible. The rest remains unexcavated behind the boundary wall and nearby buildings.
Archaeology in the Modern City
Excavations and surveys in the modern era have helped piece together how the amphitheatre evolved over time, revealing a rare and important Roman site in a busy city centre setting.
