A Brief History of Padstow Harbour

From medieval port to Cornish gem

🏛️

St Petroc Origins

Named after the 6th-century Welsh missionary Saint Petroc who landed nearby and established a monastery, giving the town its original name Petroc-stow.

Medieval Trading Port

Developed in the Middle Ages as a sheltered trading harbour for tin, copper, slate and pilchards, with the first stone pier built in the 16th century.

🐟

Modern Fishing Hub

Padstow Harbour Commissioners were established in 1844. Today it remains a working fishing port with regular crab and lobster landings alongside leisure craft.

Did You Know? The famous Doom Bar sandbank at the mouth of the Camel Estuary has caused many shipwrecks over the centuries and inspired the local beer of the same name.
