A Brief History of St Michael's Mount
From ancient legend to family home
Legendary Origins
According to legend St Michael appeared to local fishermen in 495 AD. The site became a place of pilgrimage and a small religious community was soon established.
Norman Priory
After the Norman Conquest the Mount was granted to the Benedictine monks of Mont Saint Michel in France. A stone priory was built in the 12th century.
St Aubyn Family
The St Aubyn family have lived here since 1659. The castle was opened to the public in the 20th century and is now managed in partnership with the National Trust.
