A Brief History of the Gallery

From local talent to global stage

🎨

The St Ives School

Following the Second World War, St Ives became a thriving hub for abstract and modernist artists, drawing famous names to its unique coastal light.

🏗️

A New Home

Constructed on the site of an old gasworks, the gallery opened its doors in 1993 to celebrate the incredible artistic heritage of the town and region.

The Big Expansion

In 2017, the gallery underwent a massive extension, digging directly into the cliff to create a huge new exhibition space for contemporary art.

Did You Know? The distinctive curved entrance of the gallery was actually designed to echo the shape of the gasometer that previously stood on the very same spot.

Peak Crowd Heatmap

When to expect the biggest queues

🟢 Early Mornings

Peaceful Strolling. Arriving right as the doors open at 10:00 am is the best way to enjoy the artwork without distraction.

🔴 Midday Rush

High Energy. Between 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm, the gallery can become quite congested, especially on rainy summer days.

🟡 Late Afternoons

A Gentle Buzz. Crowds thin out significantly after 3:30 pm, making it a brilliant time to browse before the venue closes.

Best Areas to Stay Near Tate St Ives

Top neighbourhoods for venue access

The Downalong

The historic fishermen's quarter. Incredibly close to the gallery, filled with charming cottages and very narrow, winding streets.

St Ives Harbour

The bustling heart of the town. Perfect if you want to be surrounded by traditional pubs, bakeries, and busy boat life.

Carbis Bay

A slightly quieter area just outside of town. You can take the incredibly scenic five-minute coastal train journey straight into St Ives.

St Ives Parking Information

Where to leave your car

🚗

Nearest Car Parks (Postcodes)

The gallery has no dedicated visitor parking, and driving through the narrow streets of St Ives can be very stressful. We strongly recommend using the larger car parks slightly out of the centre:

  • Trenwith Car Park: TR26 1DD - The largest car park in town. You can walk down the hill or take the convenient shuttle bus right into the centre.
  • St Ives Station Car Park: TR26 2BH - Great for exploring the whole town, roughly a 15-minute walk across to the gallery.
  • Island Car Park: TR26 1SY - The closest option to the gallery, but it is small and fills up extremely early in the morning.
  • St Erth Park & Ride: TR27 6JW - The best option during peak summer. Park here and take the stunning coastal train straight into St Ives.

Blue Badge parking bay is available at Barnoon car park (book at least 24 hours in advance via the gallery). Spaces at Porthmeor beach car park are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
