A Brief History of Lake Windermere

From glaciers to Victorian tourists

🧊

Glacial Origins

Windermere is a ribbon lake, carved out by retreating ice roughly 13,000 years ago during the last major Ice Age, leaving behind the spectacular U-shaped valleys.

🚂

The Railway Boom

When the Kendal and Windermere Railway reached the town in 1847, it transformed the lake from a quiet retreat for poets into a bustling holiday destination for Victorian workers.

🚤

Speed Records

The lake has a thrilling history of water speed records. Sir Henry Segrave famously broke the world water speed record here in 1930, though tragically lost his life on a subsequent run.

Did You Know? Technically, it is just called "Windermere" (the 'mere' part already means lake in Old English), so calling it "Lake Windermere" is actually saying "Lake Winder Lake"!

Windermere Parking Information

Where to leave your car

🚗

Nearest Car Parks (Postcodes)

Parking in Bowness can be a sport in itself during summer. Arrive early and use these main council-run Pay & Display car parks:

  • Braithwaite Fold (Bowness): LA23 3HE - A large car park slightly south of the main piers, usually the best bet for finding a space.
  • Glebe Road (Bowness): LA23 3HE - Right on the bay, but fills up extremely fast.
  • Rayrigg Road (Bowness): LA23 3BZ - Next to the main shops, a short 5-minute walk down to the boats.
  • Waterhead (Ambleside): LA22 0EY - The best option if you are exploring the northern tip of the lake.

Most council car parks now accept contactless payment or parking apps, but carrying a few spare coins is always a smart Lake District hack in areas with poor mobile signal.
