A Brief History of the Museum of Liverpool
A modern museum with a big story to tell
Opened in 2011
Opened to the public in 2011, the museum was created as a major new national venue dedicated to Liverpool and its people, replacing the former Museum of Liverpool Life.
Built on the Waterfront
The building sits on the Mann Island site at Pier Head, facing the River Mersey. Even if you only pop in for an hour, it is hard not to pause at the windows and watch the ferries roll in.
Four Core Galleries
Inside, the story is organised around four big themes: The Great Port, Global City, People’s Republic, and Wondrous Place, which makes it easy to explore at your own pace.

The Big Saving: Free Entry
The best deal is built-in. The main museum is free, which makes this one of the strongest value attractions on the waterfront, especially if the weather turns and you need an indoor plan.
Timed Tickets (Still Free)
If you are visiting Little Liverpool, pick up the free timed ticket early. It costs nothing, but it can save a surprising amount of waiting during weekends and school holidays.
Lunch Without the Mark-up
For a cheap midday break, bring a snack and take five outside. The benches by the waterfront are ideal for a quick bite, and you are a short stroll from the Albert Dock if you want to continue the walk after.

Visiting With Kids
Is the museum family-friendly?
Little Liverpool
A hands-on fantasy world designed for children under six. It is the kind of place where you suddenly hear, “Can we stay five more minutes?” about five times in a row.
Interactive Galleries
The main galleries mix objects with interactive displays, so it is not just reading panels. It works well for children who need something to do with their hands while they learn.
Facilities & Comfort
There are accessible toilets available, and the venue is designed to be easy to navigate with buggies. If you need a calmer pace, the building has plenty of space to step aside and reset.
What to See Inside
Unmissable highlights
The Great Port
A deep dive into Liverpool’s waterfront roots and global connections. If you are doing the docks afterwards, this gallery adds loads of context.
Global City
Explores the city’s worldwide links through trade, migration, and culture. It is one of the best sections for understanding why Liverpool feels so international.
Wondrous Place
Celebrates Liverpool’s identity and creativity. It is the gallery that tends to spark the most “Oh yeah, I forgot about that” moments.

When to expect the busiest areas
🟢 Early Mornings
Best for browsing. Arrive close to opening at 10:00 am for calmer galleries and an easier shot at a Little Liverpool timed ticket.
🔴 Midday Buzz
Most popular. 12:00 pm to 2:30 pm is typically busiest, especially weekends and school holidays when families are in full day-out mode.
🟡 Late Afternoons
Quieter finish. After about 3:30 pm, the pace often eases. It is a nice time to revisit a favourite gallery before last entry vibes kick in.
Trav’s Insider Hack: Do It Top-Down
“Squawk! A simple trick: head straight to the upper galleries first, then work your way down. By midday, the ground floor atrium can get busy with families, so starting upstairs helps you enjoy the main themes in a calmer flow. When you finish, pop outside for a quick photo. Pier Head is one of the easiest places in the city to frame the Three Graces without trying too hard.”
