A Brief History of the Museum
From the Derby collection to a global institution
The Derby Bequest
The museum originally began in 1851 after the 13th Earl of Derby donated his massive, personal natural history collection to the city of Liverpool.
A New Home
By 1860, the collection had grown so much that it was moved to its current, purpose-built classical building on William Brown Street.
Surviving the Blitz
Tragically, the museum suffered a direct hit during the May Blitz of 1941, destroying many artefacts. It was carefully rebuilt and vastly expanded in the decades that followed.

Café Savings
While entry is free, the on-site café can be pricey. Bringing your own packed lunch to eat in the designated indoor picnic area is a huge money-saver.
National Art Pass
If there are any special touring exhibitions that carry an entry fee, National Art Pass holders often secure heavily reduced entry.
Merseyrail Perks
Keep an eye on Merseyrail ticket offers. Sometimes producing a valid train ticket for the day can get you discounts in the museum gift shop.

Perfect for young astronauts. They run brilliant, family-friendly shows that explain the solar system in a visual, highly engaging way.
The Aquarium
Located on the ground floor, the aquarium features fish from all over the globe, providing an instant hit of colour right as you begin your visit.

Trav’s Insider Hack: Ditch the Coats
“Squawk! Finding the somewhat hidden lockers down in the basement area is a game-changer. The museum spans five floors and it gets incredibly warm inside. Lock away your heavy jackets and bags before you start climbing those stairs!”
