A Brief History of Buckingham Palace

From townhouse to royal headquarters

🏛️

Buckingham House

The core of today's palace was originally a large townhouse built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703, which King George III acquired in 1761 as a private retreat for Queen Charlotte.

👑

Queen Victoria

In 1837, Queen Victoria became the very first monarch to use the palace as her official residence, overseeing huge structural additions including the famous East Front.

👋

The Famous Balcony

The iconic balcony where the Royal Family gathers for major celebrations, Trooping the Colour, and royal weddings was added at Queen Victoria's request.

Did You Know? The palace has a massive 775 rooms, including 19 State Rooms, 52 Royal and guest bedrooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices, and 78 bathrooms!

Visiting With Kids

💂

The Guards

Watching the guards march to the sound of a full brass band is incredibly exciting for younger kids, but arrive early so they can actually see over the crowds.

🍰

The visitor route ends in the gardens, where you can grab a slice of cake and let the children relax on the lawn overlooking the lake.

What to See Inside

Highlights of the State Rooms

The red carpet on the Grand Staircase really does make you feel like royalty for a second, and the sheer scale of the palace is hard to wrap your head around.

🪑 The Throne Room

Famous as the backdrop for official royal wedding photographs, featuring the striking red and gold Chairs of Estate.

The White Drawing Room

Perhaps the most beautiful of all the State Rooms, housing massive crystal chandeliers and a secret mirror door used by the King.

🖼️ The Picture Gallery

A stunning 47-metre room created by George IV to display his impressive collection of masterpieces, all naturally lit from above.

Peak Crowd Heatmap

When to expect the biggest queues

🔴 Mid-Morning Rush

Maximum Crowds. The area around the gates is completely packed between 10:30 am and 11:30 am for the Changing of the Guard.

🟡 Early Afternoon

High Energy. The State Rooms remain quite busy immediately after lunch, especially during the ten-week summer opening.

🟢 Late Afternoon

A Gentle Buzz. Booking one of the last entry slots of the day (usually around 4:00 pm) is the best way to enjoy the rooms with fewer people.

Trav’s Insider Hack: Best View of the Guards

Trav, the England travel mascot

“Squawk! Everyone crowds right up against the main gates, meaning you are staring at metal bars! I highly recommend claiming a spot on the steps of the Victoria Memorial at least 45 minutes early instead. You get an amazing elevated view of the bands marching in!”

Transport & Parking Information

How to get here easily

🚇

The Tube & Car Parks

Driving in central London is generally advised against due to the Congestion Charge and heavy traffic. Taking the Tube is far easier:

  • Green Park Station: (Jubilee, Piccadilly, Victoria lines) A highly recommended scenic 10-minute walk through the park.
  • Victoria Station: (Victoria, Circle, District lines) Another very close hub, about a 10-minute walk away.
  • St James's Park Station: (Circle, District lines) A charming 10-minute stroll passing by the Wellington Barracks.

If you absolutely must drive, the nearest secure public parking is Q-Park Victoria (SW1P 2TX), though it is quite expensive.
