Launched in 2012

The museum opened in March 2012 as a passion project built around mechanical art, design, and moving sculpture. It quickly became a proper rainy day lifesaver in a town that is usually all about Tudor timber and theatre tickets.

Moved to Henley Street

It started out on Sheep Street, then moved to its current spot on Henley Street in 2013. Today it is just a short stroll from Shakespeare’s Birthplace, so it is easy to slot into a town centre wander.

Interactive by Design

Unlike a traditional museum where you keep your hands in your pockets, MAD is built for interaction. Expect whirring gears, rolling balls, and the kind of satisfying clicks that make both kids and grown-ups grin without realising it.

No need to pre-book on most days, you can usually just pay on the door. Pre-booked tickets are only required during the Warwickshire February and October half-term holidays.

• People who hate noise: It is full of movement and sound, which is half the fun, but not everyone’s idea of calm.
• Pushchair-heavy days: The museum is compact, so busy periods can be awkward with pushchairs (there is storage at the entrance, though).

Hands-On Learning

It is sneaky education. Kids end up talking about motion, forces, and cause-and-effect without feeling like they are in a lesson.

Supervision Rules

Children under 16 need to be accompanied by a supervising adult at all times. This is a mechanical museum, so staff take safety seriously.

Pushchairs

Busy and compact. Stratford gets packed on weekends, and this is a classic wet-weather escape, so it can feel tight when the town is heaving.

Shottery

A quieter, picture-postcard base near Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. Ideal if you want a calmer stay while still being close to the centre.
