A Brief History of Shakespeare's New Place

From grand home to tranquil gardens

🏠

Shakespeare's Purchase

In 1597 Shakespeare bought New Place for £60 - one of the largest houses in Stratford. He lived here with his family until his death in 1616.

🛠️

The House Demolished

The house was demolished in 1759 after a later owner grew tired of visitors. The site lay empty until the gardens were lovingly restored.

🌿

Modern Gardens

Today the site features a footprint of the original house, a restored knot garden Shakespeare would have recognised, and sculptures inspired by his plays.

Did You Know? Shakespeare is thought to have written some of his later masterpieces, including The Tempest, while living at New Place.
